Famous as a song writer, Johann Zumsteeg's settings were preferred by Goethe to those of Schubert! He was a life-long friend of Schiller and thus was a central figure in the development of the romantic lied. He also wrote much other music including operas, sacred choral works and instrumental music. He had studied the cello and wrote 10 concertos for the instrument.
