There were a confusing number of composers who went under the name "Martini" in 18th Century programmes and publications. The 4 most famous were Vincente Martin y Soler (1754-1806), Pietro (Padre) Sammartini (1636-1701) and the brothers Giovanni Battista Sammartini (1706-1784)[with whom many people, including Mozart studied] and Guiseppe Sammartini. Guiseppe, the older brother, lived his last 22 years in London where he was famous as a solo oboist, frequently playing in Handel's orchestra. As a composer, his fame developed after his death and resulted in many publications in London. His compositions show the influence of Handel but possess their own character with frequent use of elements of the galant style. His op 7 set of 6 concertos is for Solo Oboe, 2 Solo Violins and strings.
