Antoine (Antonin) Reicha was Czech by birth. He met Beethoven in Bonn and they bec ame good friends. In 1793 he moved to Hamburg where he spent 6 years teaching and composing. In 1799 he tried for operatic success in Paris, but when this failed he moved to Vienna, where he renewed his acquaintance with Beethoven and met Haydn and Salieri. In 1808 he moved to Paris where he spent the rest of his life. He wrote all kinds of music and published theoretical treatises on composition. He became a professor at the Paris Conservatoire where among his pupils were Berlioz, Liszt, Gounod and Cesar Franck.
