Josef Myslivecek, the Bohemian composer, achieved great fame during his rather short lifetime, particularly in Italy where he was dubbed ‘Il divino Boemo’. He wrote many very successful operas, oratorios and instrumental works. Sadly, his rather dissolute lifestyle resulted in him dying at the age of 43 from venereal disease. Mozart was a friend and admirer and visited him in hospital in 1777. His music displays many similarities with that of Mozart who reworked one of Myslivecek’s arias ‘Il caro mio bene’ as the canzonetta ‘Ridente la calma’ for voice and piano.
