Virtuoso violinist and the finest swordsman in Europe, the Chevalier St.
Georges (Joseph Boulogne) was a unique character in 18th century France. Son of
a french aristocrat and a negress from Guadaloupe he rose to become the leader
of the 'Concert des Amateurs' in Paris and when that was disbanded he formed the
'Concert de la Loge Olympique'. He also held military posts at various times and
was in constant demand for fencing exhibitions. His music is unlike most French
music of the time, being more like early Mozart in its rhythmic vigour and
tunefulness.
