Jean-Baptiste Davaux (1742-1822) was an important figure in French life around the time of the Revolution. He was a violinist and composer but always referred to himself as an amateur. He was a government official and after the Revolution served in the Ministry of War and in the Grand Chancellory of the Légion d’honneur. In 1814 he was elected to the Légion d’honneur in recognition of his 30 years of government service. He was almost exclusively a composer of instrumental music apart from 2 comic operas and some songs. He became internationally famous, particularly for his ‘Sinfonies Concertantes’ although he also wrote symphonies, concertos and an enormous amount of chamber music. He was also the inventor of an early form of metronome which he called the ‘chronomètre’.
