Michael Brand was born in a small Hungarian town, Mosonyinow part of Austria. He was mainly self-taught as a composer, composing in a germanic style. In 1842 he moved to Budapest gradually becoming more involved in a nationalistic hungarian style. In 1859, continuing his nationalistic development, he changed his name to Mihaly Mosonyi and wrote operas etc. in Hungarian. The Lieder Op 5 and the Schilflieder Op 6 are from his earlier, germanic, period and are absolutely in the tradition of the German Romantic Lied of Schubert and Schumann.
