Bortnyansky was born in the Ukraine. After a period of study in Italy, where he had operatic success with "Creonte" and "Alcide" in Venice and "Quinto Fabio" in Modena, he returned to Russia in 1779. He held posts at the imperial court and wrote more operas including "Le Fils-Rival ou La moderne Stratonice" written for a performance at the imperial castle at Pavlovsk in 1787. He also wrote a large amount of beautiful church music, much of it still popular and frequently performed in Russia.
